Dancehall make me very happy when I listen to it. I have discovered this music when I was in 18 years old. At the beginning it was called, ragga music and it was bouncy too. I listened to singer like chakademus and plyers, chaba ranks, sean paul (yeah sean paul was in the beginning of this music with songs like deport them...), that's why I laugh when radios just discover him 2 years ago, because he has already released 2 albums. The sean's paul former album was very very good, it was a worlwide success that prove that music and particulary good music has no border. Now I'm listenning singer like sean paul he just released an album this year, a good album in my mind with some good song like temperature ever blazing (that's funny because this song has been released 3 years ago and remixed for his new album and every body think that's a new song) elephant man is my favorite singer I love his songs, for me that's the best but he isn't as popular as sean paul! There is a distinction to do in dancehall there's the french dancehall with som singer like krys and admial t, daddy morry and the jamaican dancehall, that's for me the best with singer like bounty killa, cappleton, sean paul... No dancehall is very a good music that mean joy and when I listen to this music I forget all my problems my advices for people who will read that is listen dancehall!!!

I choosed those musics because the history are almost indentical. The Zouk was born in the Antilles by a minority group. The music is a way to pitch the culture of the antilles. It's the same thing for the Rap. In fact, the rap was born in American by afro-american to claim theirs rights or identitys in America. The music is subversive. Today the zouk and the rap is very listinning to black people. When i was young i listenned to rap and danced the hip hop. Today i dance on Zouk. It's very good music which deal with love. Here is the history of the both music.

The history of Zouk

In the same way that "the creole" is a mixture of different languages, Zouk is a music in which the various influences are taken from the diversity of the Caribean musics.
Since its creation in 1974, it had remained the most popular music in the "Antilles". It represents nowdays the cementof the identity of the Antilles. Moreover, Zouk caraterizes the emancipation of a whole people who has been able reinvent its own music.
In the dictionary "le petit Robert", it is written that the denomination "zouk" means : music of very rhythmed music of danse, iits origin comes from the little Antilles. It appeared in the 1980's. Yet, the famous percusionnist from Martinique, Henri Guedon, explains that during yhe 1960's, the word "zouk" was linked with the places of dance only created for the poorest. Some talk about a Haitian origin of the word; indeed its origin remains a mystery. At the Origin of the Zouk music, we can find "Kassav". So, if we speak about the birth of the zouk, we have to deal with the creation of kassav band. For the majority of the Antillans, this band has created the fundamental bases and given the musical colour of zouk. P.Edouard Decimus had the idea to adapt zouk to the current musical technics. He met Feddy Marshall, then Jacob Desvarieux a well-know guitarist. In the 1980's they were joined by Jocelyne Beroard. Other Musicians would follow Kassav's example and would make live this music all around the world. The music reached its climax in the 1980's and 1990's. Some tracks world be printed in the minds of the french people like "fruit de la passsion" by Francky Vincent, or the famous " Mal donne" by Zouk machine.
We can find different declinaisons in Zouk : Zouk is a musical stream which still gives birth to new trends nowadays that naturally new names are given to.

Zouk Love
Zouk RnB
The Ragga Zouk
The Zouk superstar

The developpement of the tempo is the characteristic of the new zouk. As time has gone by, the tempo has slown down. Today, there is a real passion for the zouk love.

The HIP HOP culture

We can speak of "culture", given that there is a code, a way of dressing (baggy, cap, big shoes, jean's that full under the ass), a language "le verlan" and a music(RAP, RnB, RAÏnB).

The genesis of HIP HOP culture

The hip hop music began in the USA at the e

nd of the 1970's. The music was born in the American Blacks Guettos during the Blacks Panthers' period.

In 1979, Rappers'Delight" by Sugarhill Gang began the first rap hit in the world, and especially in France where the Hip Hop movement reached the young in the suburbs. Some stars began to appear like the "RunDMC, Grandmaster Flash or Afrika bambaataa. The "Zulu nation" was created and the movement reached in France. At the time, the musical style is very funky and electronic with very heavy basses : One already sampled the James Brown's hits and the scratches began very numerous. In France, with the beginning of the free radios, the rap began to be (broadaested) and in 1984's some emissions appeared on TV like H I P H O P on TF1 presented by Sidney. Thanks to that mediatisation, the hip hop movement began to be popular in France that became already the second rap country. At this time The French rap did'nt really exist but all the young were attracted by the dance and some competitions took place. In the USA, the Public Enemy band gave a second force to the rap in 1985-86's, giving up the "party" side in order to denonce the racial and social inegalities. At the end of 1980's, the french rap appeared with the first "freestyles" by NTM, Assassin, MC Solar etc in live from the "Deenastyle" emission on Radio Nova presented by Dee Nasty. The french rap grew, and some "compils" like Rap Attitude allowed to reveal to the public the first generation of French rappers : NTM, Assassin, IAM, MC Solar etc. The mediatisation went with Rapline on M6 and the birth of magazines like "Affiche" and "Get Busy". The style was still American and dominated widely in all the realms of the Hip Hop. At the beginning of 1990's, we can speak of the real birth in the sense that its spirit became more (revendicatif) and its lyrics had a paramount importance. In 1995-96's, the american rap changed definitely with some artists like 2Pac, Notorious Big, Coolio, the fugees etc and the creation of powerful labels like Death Row and Def JAm. In France, the positive, light and funky rap invaded the french music with MC Solar, IAM etc. Some were even awarded by the " victoire de la musique". The rap is nowdays implanted in the french musical landscape.

Some names of Gospel.

Georges Leile was the first black slave to be allowed to preach in 1774 and to create first black church of America, "The African Baptist Church" in Savannah, Georgia.

<- Richard Allen funded the first parish of African Methodist episcopal church. It really has governed my interest in this type of music. That's an anecdote but in my opinion, the proof music and here Gospel can permit to open people to others and to get over human borders.

It was few years ago, in an outdoors theater. I was come in a little village of Provence to see a Gospel concert. There was a lot of people, as well adults as children. All these people talk, laugh too and it was a lot of noise. I was set up at the top of the theater. It was a great summer evening, stars shined in the sky.

Suddenly, the choir is gone up the step and concert has begun. All persons who made noise were suspended to the lips of choristers. They have sung all classicals as "Oh when the saints" or "Oh happy day".

At a moment, the chief of choir has begun to explain her little brother has had a serious accident some years ago. He was burned by a fire. Her voice really was sensitive, it was so moving. And it was rising and rising in emotion, again and again. She has explained her brother has been saved by music. I was crying and listening this woman.

I'm telling this anecdote to show how music can exceed human borders. So, territories are inhabited by people and they are likely to be touched by musical emotion.

Presentation

This blog is created on monday 23.01.2006. It's a part of the work that we have to do in our english class with Mr Hutchinson.

The theme which has been choosen is music. That's a large theme, so we have prefered to reduce it to talk about music around the world and the way it permit to go beyond borders. From where the title of this blog: As something can permit to go beyond the nations, music could permit the same thing. We will especially speak about four types of music: zouk and rap for Hélène, blues and gospel for Claire.

The principle which we have fixed ourselves is to write articles about musics, when they open borders and hearts and, finally, when they open people to others. So, this blog will tell short anecdotes and will give to readers photos or musical extracts by links to web sites.

So, we hope you will appreciate these pages and we encourage all people who wants to give us his (or her) opinion about the contents which are here.

So...
Begin!
